someone finally said it

This is unfair. People deal with loss and trauma differently.

Good fucking job everyone who can deal with their demons without addiction and depression.

But what exactly is telling Jasper he’s a useless piece of shit going to do? Except confirm what he already thinks of himself?

As long as everyone within t100 universe is cool with shitting on Clarke, nonstop, without a lick of sympathy for the losses she’s continuously wracked up, they should also recognize that Jasper is, on his best day, dead weight.

I praise the writers for calling out Jasper. He knew her for 3 weeks, Raven dated Finn for years and watched him get stabbed by her friend and Clarke had to watch Lexa die in her arms after a year and finally being together, yet you don’t see them crying about it, drinking and acting like a psychopath.

@meowcaholic the writers aren’t “calling out” Jasper. This scene is very clearly a mentally ill person’s worst nightmare- we have these thoughts already, that we’re a waste and a bother and that the people we hang around hate us for needing help. The writers are calling out people who don’t understand depression and PTSD by reminding them that yeah, if you hate someone for having depression that doesn’t fall in your perfect box of acceptable, you’re kind of the villain here. Honestly, I can’t believe what some people are saying given that this is TEXTBOOK “make the person with depression feel guilty because I’m a dick” behavior on ALIE/Raven’s part. It should be obvious that this isn’t a “call out,” it’s torture.

@clexamindpalace Dead weight? Are you kidding me? Jasper literally just SAVED RAVEN’S LIFE. If he hadn’t sedated her, CARRIED HER ASS to a rover and crashed the gates, Raven would still be Alie. @meowcaholic About him having known Maya only a few weeks? He’d known Octavia a much shorter span of time when he declared he would walk into hell for her. He is clearly someone who’s already been established as being capabke of falling hard and fast for someone. If Octavia had returned his affection, it would have been a whirlwind romance as well.

@severity-softly,
As I haven’t watched any episodes since Lexa got Tara Maclayed, I wouldn’t know about Jasper finally contributing. If that’s the case, good for him. My problem with Jasper’s grief is not that he didn’t know Maya long enough to miss her (Clarke and Lexa were only in the same place at the same time for like a month). My problem is that everyone on this goddamn show has PSTD, but Jasper is allowed to experience his grief from the moment Maya dies until the moment he apparently saves Raven. None of the female characters are allowed to fall apart. The lose and they suffer and they hurt, but the expectations placed on them don’t waiver.

Jasper has been dead weight for much of his time on the series. In season 1, I thought he’d grow on me because he helps save Octavia from the sea monster and generally tries to be okay, but he’s a shitty friend to Monty (a literal genius tryna contact the ark), and he pines expectantly after Octavia like saving a life earns you a romantic partner.

At mount weather, everyone looks to him as a leader, despite his eagerness to take dante wallace at his word without at least investigating further. Jasper ignores and minimizes Clarke’s fears that something shady is happening, and then refuses to go looking for her when she disappears because it might disrupt his cushy arrangement or budding relationship (meanwhile, Monty asks him over and over to help find Clarke because something must be wrong). His boner for Maya convinced him that a group of people kidnapping grounders and bleeding them is forgivable/excusable, and that it’s logical for the 47 to donate their bodies to help the mountain men reach the ground.

Jasper had one opportunity at leadership, and it was wholly underwhelming. And still, when Clarke and Bellamy have to irradiate those genocidal maniacs, Jasper blames Clarke and claims he *almost* stopped them without the deaths. Guess what, *almost* cost Raven Reyes her good leg, and had Clarke not made that decision, she’d be blamed for the deaths of a bunch of her own people, instead of just the mountain men.

And after all this, Jasper has the audacity to shame Clarke and needle her about a tough, necessary choice everytime he gets. While I do think it was cruel of the writers to make Alie as Raven say that to him, I think it’s worse to allow Jasper’s pain to exclude him from the workload. This is war, and none of the women get a day off.

Clarke lost 2 loves, one in her arms, plus her father and her best friend, plus her mom’s apparently an ALIE zombie rn. Octavia lost her love, and is constantly made to choose between her skaikru and trikru while being shat on by both, and has seen her brother (the one person she should trust) become a mass murderer. Raven lost her love, her legs, her mentor, and gets tortured so fucking often. Still, if any one of them drops the ball, they will immediately be villified. Sorry Jasper lost Maya and all, but he is still, generally speaking, dead fucking weight.

Okay, it’s pretty clear to me you didn’t pay much attention to Jasper for two seasons, and you’re shitting on him now because you’re pissed about you faves.

In S1, Jasper saves Octavia, becomes one of Bellamy’s trusted gunmen, saves Bellamy’s life when Lincoln tries to kill him, sloshes around in urine to make fresh gunpowder when they start running out, blows up a bridge to stop an attack, helps wire the dropship explosion, sets it off himself (and figures out what the problem was when it didn’t go off the first time)… tell me again how Jasper Jordan was dead weight in S1? And yeah, he may have been a little shitty to Monty, but best friends are shitty sometimes, and he’s flawed like everyone else, and when Monty goes missing, he’s the one that convinces Bellamy to look for him when Bellamy just assumes he’s dead.

In S2, yeah, he’s a little escapist in the first part. But he was already showing signs of PTSD early in S1, so I can’t blame him too much. When Maya tells them what’s happening, though, he steps up. He comes up with plans that the 47 follow. Not all of them work, but some of them do. Bellamy trusts him enough to slip him a gun. Because of all he did in S1, his people trust him and expect so much from him.

And you know what? No. Not everyone on this show has PTSD. Everyone has experienced a great amount of trauma, but PTSD is a MEDICAL CONDITION that not everyone is susceptible to. Like 7% of the population. Not every soldier who goes to war comes back with PTSD. Jasper’s brain chemistry is legitimately altered. He CAN’T just suck it up.

As someone who is mentally ill, who has been hospitalized for it, had family members hospitalized for it, done some of the things Jasper has trying to make the pain go away, etc., it is fucking OFFENSIVE that you are shitting on a mentally ill teenager for displaying signs of mental illness. It is OFFENSIVE to cheer when someone tries to tear that character down even more. It SUCKS that the other characters (the men too, not just the ladies) don’t often get to grieve. But like you said, this is war. The characters that are capable of moving forward have to. Jasper Jordan was not capable of doing that until recently.

And if you stopped watching the show because of Lexa, why the hell are you even bothering to jump in just to shit on other characters now? It’s petty.

As a side note to this whole mess of hating on people with mental illnesses and vilifying them for something they can’t control:

Don’t even pretend that if the roles weren’t reversed, with the men staying stoic and the women being the ones to outwardly grieve, that you wouldn’t be pissed about the misogyny of it all. Tumblr, and the media, hell even society is so transparent. Strong female characters suddenly stop being strong when they start showing that they have emotions and can be damaged. So if you were seeing Clarke or Raven “wallowing in their grief and being dead weight” because of all that they’d lost, y’all would be angry at the writers for making the women weaker than the men. Now instead, the show decided to turn all of this on it’s head by making most of the female characters good at adapting to trauma and fear, while making the men be open and honest with how they’re feeling. This goes against all supposed beliefs about what men “should” be, which is the strong, brave, emotionless robots you people who are shitting on Jasper think they should be.

This may come as a shock, but men can get PTSD. Men can have depression. Men can have self-hatred. Men can be scared out of their minds. Men can be overwhelmed with their regrets. The one time a show tries to show that, to show that men don’t always have to be strong but that it’s okay for them to vulnerable, it’s okay for them to cry, it’s okay for them have mental health issues, the fandom vilifies them, calls them dead weight, and cheers on the villain of the story for tearing them down even more. Anyone who shits on Jasper for having depression disgusts me and needs to look long and hard at themselves and their prejudices against mental health. Because bare in mind, Jasper got speared in the first episode of this show and has had a pretty traumatizing time since then. He’s allowed to be a little messed up by that.
