Bellarke’s idea of love comes from their parents

the-ships-to-rule-them-all:

The role models for an ideal love come from our parents.  Clarke and Bellamy are dramatically influenced by their parents’ ideas of love. And if you look at their relationships with other people, especially each other, their parents’ ideals have a dramatic impact on their idea of love.

Aurora was the idea that love means giving up everything, including your own self worth, and Jake/Abby were of the idea that duty means sacrificing love.

Are we all forgetting that Abby betrayed Jake to save the world? Those are Clarke’s parents, people who will sacrifice love in the name of duty and that was who Le.xa was. Clarke’s biggest role model for a romantic relationship are her parents and her parents clearly loved each other, but that love wasn’t enough in the face of duty. This is a key reason why Clarke was able to sacrifice her love for both Finn and Le.xa, she knew doing so would lead to her being able to save her people.Everybody thinks that Clarke’s line about being weak is a direct result of Le.xa and her theory that Love is Weakness, but it’s an indirect result of her parents and their idea that love can be sacrificed for duty - CLARKE LETS BELLAMY RISK HIS LIFE BECAUSE IT’S THEIR DUTY AS LEADERS TO PROTECT THEIR PEOPLE.

And Aurora gave up everything including her body, prosituting herself to the guards, to protect O/Bell. So Bellamy willingly lets himself be tortured to protect the delinquents, throws himself over a cliff to save a girl he doesn’t even know and his body is not important to him. He gives his body up in service of protecting his children/delinquents. Bellamy will take whatever pain is thrown at him if it means relieving the pain for other people, including not letting people intervene when Octavia beats him out of grief. Aurora taught him that and her willingness to give up her body for her children taught Bellamy that his body can just be a vessel for pain if it means keeping those he loves safe. Aurora gave up her dignity and thus her self worth to protect her children, and Bellamy does the same. He commits reckless actions and lets other people blame him for mistakes that should not fall on him because he refuses to believe he is worth anything.

This manifests in the way Bellamy and Clarke view and treat each other. After season 3, especially the finale, I don’t think we can deny that Clarke and Bellamy love each other, and that the show seems to be leading to a romantic confirmation of Bellarke in season 4.

Now because Bellamy’s idea of love is to be selfless and to give and to give until there is nothing left of him, we see the overtures of his love for Clarke long before he even seems to realize he is in love with her. Bellamy is constantly giving his own body to protect Clarke without remembering that he needs protection as well. Bellamy knocking a guy out with the butt of his rifle in 1x11, the way he runs after her completely recklessly in 3x02, and wanting to shoulder the burden of Mount Weather and the eradication of people that were his allies to take away some of Clarke’s pain are examples of Bellamy’s love being about personal sacrifice.

Clarke on the other hand hides her love of Bellamy, at least she hides the depth of her love for him, because her parents taught her that duty comes before love and, if need be, you must sacrifice love. The idea of sacrificing Bellamy scares Clarke very much, but she has a deep faith and devotion to him. Her continued belief in him through 2x11-2x15, the hugs in 2x05 and 3x13, the way she grabs onto his hand FOR COMFORT in 3x16, these are examples of Clarke finding faith and peace with Bellamy. She refuses to lose him because she scared she wouldn’t be able to sacrifice him if she actually admitted her feelings and doing so would mean she wouldn’t be able to fulfill her duty.  This is exemplified by 3x02, when Clarke agrees to stop fighting if it means Bellamy will live. Her relationship with Le.xa is in fact a byproduct of the relationship her parents had. Le.xa is the personification of the duty over love idea, which is probably one of the reasons why Clarke forgives her and falls into bed with Le.xa because she believes this is a relationship that she was meant for. Clarke knows Bellamy would let the world burn him alive if they ever actually became romantic and that type of all encompassing love scares the shit of her, so she stays with Le.xa where the love she has is expected based on her parents’ idea of love.

Bellamy and Clarke are created and informed by the ideals of love their parents showed them. But with each other, they are able to break free of those patterns and create new ones. And that is an aspect of the journey we see Bellamy and Clarke going on throughout the show, learning about what love truly means to them.

This is so perfect and pure and I love it. It’s absolutely correct and I’m so glad that someone has finally taken the time to break down the way, why and how of Bellamy and Clarke and love.
